Cat behaviour – introducing your cat to other pets

When you’re at work your cat spends her entire day alone at home, and you think she would have more fun if she would have a play mate. So, you decided to adopt another pet to help her spend her time in more enjoyably, but she doesn’t seem to get along with any other cat or dog. Now you wonder if you can modify her behaviour to convince her to befriend another pet. Well, it’s complicated because cats are complex creatures.

Before adopting a new pet, it’s important to help your cat improve her socialising skills because you don’t want to stress her out by bringing a new cat or dog in the house. Cat socialisation takes time, and you need to support her during the way. Here is how.

Give her, her own space

Ask the shelter personnel if you can take the cat or dog you want to adopt home for a short visit to introduce them to your cat. The first times your cat may be scared or simply not interested to know them so she may hide or stay in another corner of the room. Don’t force her to socialise with the new pet if she shows you that she needs her own space. If you already adopted a new pet but your old one doesn’t get along with them, you can accommodate the new one at a kennel gardermoen when you’re at work to prevent fights. When you come back home you take them with you and supervise their contact.

Provide separate spaces

All pets need to eat, nap, play and potty so you need to create different spaces where they can do it until they start to socialise. Make eat, nap, play and potty spaces for your new pet, advisably in another room than where your old cat sits. If you adopt a dog, you don’t need a potty space because they can go in the back yard. When you don’t have time to walk your dog take them to a dyreklinikk nittedal because the specialists from there organise activities to keep pets busy.

Positive reinforcement

You need to identify the parts that go well between your pets. Do they sit peacefully in the same room while you read a book? If yes, then try to keep them in the same room as long as possible, even if they don’t sit close. Taking both of them to a kattehotell can get them out of their comfort zone and encourage them to socialise with each other and with other pets.

Do butterflies outside captivate their attention? Play them butterfly videos on TV or buy a device that projects butterfly shapes on the walls. Do everything you can to keep them busy and entertained. Every activity they both like is a way to help them bond so encourage them to spend time together. If they feel safe when you’re in the same room try to be present every time you establish contact.
