The Green House

All information you need for a green house.

Cool your flat without conditioned air

Hot summer temperatures leave you in your flat without air, you feel like in an unwanted sauna and everything around you suffers – plants, pets and food. What can you do to avoid air conditioned, which charge too much your power bill and it’s not recommended for respiratory health? You can choose the simpler methods, old and yet effective.

The conditioned air doesn’t exist for a long, like an invention, but high temperatures were always in history, and people have survived. There are tricks to keep your apartment free of excessive heat, tricks that cost less than air conditioning.

Learn to “work” with the sun. Keep windows open and ventilate the house at night and close them in the morning. If you have windows to the east and west, close them by morning on the east and the afternoon on the west. If they are facing south, close them as long as the sun beat on them. If you’re afraid of mosquitoes and insects and do not feel comfortable to sleep at night with windows open, there are anti-insect netting that you can easily put on the window. Plus you can leave it just ajar. At least once a day, vent by creating a strong current of air (leave everything open, including the front door, at least ten minutes – do this in the evening or early morning as the air hasn’t started to hot from the sun).

Drop dark colored drapes, curtains or blinds. Any dark color will attract more heat. Put white on the windows, even if it is only a solution for the summer. Keep white curtains drawn during the day. They keep away the sun. If you sit on the top floor and the insulation on the block is very old, the situation is more complicated because it will heat your apartment from top to bottom anyway. You can apply the block method with white – a large white cloth, caught a few centimeters above the insulation and roof inclination to follow the block, for when it rains. Of course, this depends on how you get along with people who have keys to the roof.

Rather than to get burn in your pocket with conditioned air, use fans better. Are quite cheap and use like a bulb or less. Find fans with oscillation movement and speed (there are now including remote control and the ability to program them to stop themselves or to work differently at night). Fans have the advantage that they can be moved to rooms as needed. Plus you can use more at home, for example, one high and powerful in the room where you spend more time and a small one for the bedroom.
