Current Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry is a challenging and creative science, whose modern age begins in the nineteenth century and with the help of which new perspectives can constantly be revealed, and never exhausted.

Current organic chemistry is a branch of chemistry that deals with the study of the structure, properties and reactions of compounds which contain mostly carbon, but also hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, halogens (bromine, chlorine, fluorine, iodine), silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, magnesium, potassium, cobalt, zinc, lead, etc. The name of organic chemistry attests itself the existence of a very strong connection with the human body, but besides DNA, peptides, proteins, enzymes, organic compounds are everywhere around us, being located, most of the time in the center of the economic growth a state, in industries such as rubber, plastics, pharmaceuticals, detergents, fuels, paints and in agrochemical industry. The fundamentals of border sciences, such as biochemistry, biotechnology or, on the other hand, of medicine, are determined by the organic chemistry and the role of the chemical products in the various processes of life.

Most modern materials, materials that are of high performance, are made, at least a part of them, of organic compounds. Definitely, this branch of chemistry is vital in maintaining the current standards of life on Earth. Organic chemists are present in extremely different industries, working on projects that imply either basic research or effective product development. In the pharmaceutical industry, in which the current organic chemistry owns resources regarding many of the products used today to fight disease, unsuspected paths can arise, for example, from the structure of a molecule taken from nature (a complex antibiotic, an antitumor agent or a replacement hormone, as is the case of insulin), which can be modified in order to potentiate its activity, reducing side effects, etc.

The technology used in the current organic chemistry enables the discovery of new organic materials, based on the use of advanced tools, such as nuclear magnetic resonance, gas or liquid chromatography, infrared light, ultraviolet waves and direct spectroscopy. Most instruments used by chemists are controlled by a computer, while the modeling of complex molecules requires 3D computer modeling capabilities, in order to view areas that require synthetic modification.

Researchers at AER (Atomic Energy Research) announced in 2012 the development of a new technology (nano-technology) that facilitates unique chemical reactions, in a very short time (1000 experiences per day), of which to be recorded the results that could lead to obtaining a new product. To create such opportunities, many substances (thousands) are mixed in small amounts, that can interact and the serendipity will discover unknown compounds. The principle is thus known as the “forced serendipity”.
