How much energy would provide a system with solar panels on my house?

If you want to buy a solar system for hot water, you wondered certainly how much energy would produce in your case, which means what yield has and how much conventional energy you could save in a year using the system.

The efficiency of a solar system for hot water is seen in the percentage of energy provided for your domestic water heating, compared to total energy necessary. This percentage is an average of 75% in case of a VELUX for hot water supply system, VELUX solar panels are the only market with a surface upside down pyramid, which captures the sun as a funnel coming from all directions keeping them inside the panel by repeated reflections.

The 75% percent may vary depending on several parameters: the geographic area where the house is located, its orientation towards the cardinal points, roof slope and size, the orientation of solar panels on the roof, hot water necessary.

To calculate and compare the yield offered by VELUX system let’s take two examples of single-family homes located in different geographical areas.
Both families use to heat hot water for a conventional heating system, one using natural gas as fuel, the other – electricity.

In each house is installed a VELUX solar hot water tank with a capacity of 280 l and two VELUX solar panels, with size of 134 x 180 cm. Positioning panels in both cases is on the southern slope of the roof with a 45 ⁰, these being the coordinates for the best possible efficiency of the panels.

If the house with natural gas, the percentage of energy provided by a VELUX solar system for hot water production, is 78.5% of the total energy, and in the case of the other house, 80.8%. In the first one, the annual amount of solar radiation available is 1234kWh / m², and the second is 1295kWh / m².

These numbers are translated into annual savings to conventional energy of 326.3 m3 for natural gas the first family home case, respectively of 3134.4 KWh electricity for the second family. In addition, such low C02 emissions are about 690 kg in the first case, respectively 2088 kg in the second case. In both situations is the maximum system performance and you can help personally to reduce carbon emissions that cause global warming.
