Ideas for creating an eco-friendly patio

Everyone talks about going green, but few people actually do something to create a beautiful space for them and their families. If you want to be proactive, the best place to start is with your own patio that surely needs a do-over. To this extent, here are a few ideas of what you can do to have a beautiful and eco-friendly patio:

Don’t overcrowd it with furniture

Sure, there are a few things that every back yard must have and when you collaborate with an online store such as The Out Door Furniture Company, you will surely find exactly what you wanted to make your patio more comfortable. But, other than a hammock, a swing and maybe a nice table with some chairs, you really don’t need to fill your entire garden with furniture. You should make sure you have enough space in your yard for your children to play or for you to do other activities that will relax you.

Plant flowers that attract bees

Before you get panicked that bees might sting you or your children you should know that honey bees are not aggressive by nature and unless they are obviously provoked they will not sting. Considering that the US honey bee population has declined with almost 50% during the last century and that one third of all the food we use required bee pollination, it certainly is an eco-friendly decision to plant flowers that will attract them. Wildflowers and fruits attract them best, so when you are at the seed store, be sure to look for something that you would normally see in a field. They will be liked by bees and they will make your yard look great as well.

Plant fruit trees

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to pluck an apple from your own tree, wipe it on your T-shirt and eat it right then and there or perhaps, to make a cherry pie from your own cherries? If this is something that you would like, plant some fruit trees in your back yard. If you don’t have too much space, plant only one and choose your favorite fruit. You will definitely love it when the season is right and you get to harvest the fruit and you will also encourage bee pollination, something that is also great for the environment.

Collect rain water

Another great thing that you can do if you want to go that extra mile and choose the eco-friendly option is to collect rainwater and use it to water your trees and other plants. Just place a bucket directly under the gutter, so that when it rains it will fall in your bucket rather than on the ground. You will not use as much tap water for your plants the next time they need watering. In addition, if your local water has a lot of limestone in it, you could also use some of this water to wash your hair. It will become smooth and silky and you will not have to use as much conditioner!
