The Green House

All information you need for a green house.

Signs that you’re dealing with a dodgy tradesman

Recently, a survey has shown that electricians are some of the most dishonest tradesmen. But the situation isn’t any different for other industries. So next time when you decide to redecorate your “green” home, it might be ideal to question their honesty. For each project, there is the risk of having a poorly done job, with materials that don’t necessarily fit your requirements, and that might compromise your lifestyle. Below are some great tips to identify what are commonly known as “cowboys”.

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is

You have a major project and you received a suspicious cheap quote. Skip it. You know it best how much money you put into your eco-friendly property and you don’t want to have it all ruined by a tradesman that is a scam. As tempting as it might be when accepting such a quote, you will certainly regret it at the end of the day. Better invest a little more in the services of a truly reliable professional and you will save significant money on the long run.

They’re asking for upfront payment

And in most of the cases, they’re asking for cash. No credit card, just cash. By simply paying the team before even starting the job is dangerous because they may delay the process once they see themselves in the money’s possession, and in some of the cases, they may never show up again to start the job. Also, when paying upfront you take the risk of paying a high price for an incredibly poor job. Also, it’s a good idea to refuse any tradesperson that requires payment only in cash. This won’t provide any type of protection if the project is poorly-done.

You’re unable to find information on the company online

Whether they’re freelancing, whether they’re part of a larger company, you must always be able to find some information online on the company. The more, the better. Also, check for other’s reviews on the company and the quality of the services provided. Obviously, avoid working with a company with poor online reviews. You could also get in touch with former clients and find out if they encountered issues when working with the vendor. Online references are a goldmine, so pay increased attention to those.

You can’t find any real contact details of the tradesperson

If a trade persons’ is unwilling to disclose any type of contact details, avoid them. You want to find a company always willing to stay at their client’s disposal and for this you need a telephone number of any kind. A business address registered with the authorities in force is also a great start.

These are some pieces of advice you could follow if you want to identify a dodgy tradesperson. Make sure to investigate your options well before making a decision since not doing so might turn out a costly mistake. Also, always try to pay with a credit card, because it might give you some protection.
