Technology and solar energy for the ideal ecological home

A fully heated house without it being connected to the heat or a light apartment without the need of electricity is a thing that do not seem anymore detached from sci-fi movies.

Lumenhaus is the daring project of the students from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and Solar Decathlon Europe 2010 award winners. They made a house with solar technology combining ecological and flexible architecture. The good thing is that this project may someday see the daylight.

The house’s name comes from the word “lumen,” which means “light power” and “Haus”, which means “house.” The home has a flexible architecture that will integrate a special system. Thus, during the day will collect energy and light to use them later at night.

Also, the house lights will be able to change color depending on atmospheric temperature or tenant needs. Roof is covered entirely with solar panels and the house construction is made of materials that can be recycled or reused.

Students have integrated a system called Eclipsys which is actually the house structure composed of two layers, one with translucent matte appearance and one with metallic appearance. The metallic-looking is placed on protecting the northern and southern sides of direct sunlight.

The two panels are designed in a way to store as much solar energy as it needs and to help in the cockpit during the year. The panels are mobile and they close and open so that the sun can penetrate into the home and warming the home even in winter. In addition, the house’s computer system may be activated remotely through a mobile application.

As in the case of the Solar Decathlon home, Lumenhaus is also energy efficient and equipped with solar technology to generate more energy than is required for home consumption.

The key project is a central core and an innovative wall structure in working order, to respond to the weather and the behavior of of the inhabitants.

Mobile screens and insulation panels – of translucent and airgel sheets – dominate the outside while the LEDs light up the structure at night. Also, everything is wired, monitored, and connected to a handy iPhone application for reasons of energy efficiency and comfort.

Passing through 10 contests, Virginia Tech has snatched victory with a margin of one point above the Ikaros project from the University of Applied Sciences in Germany. Virginia Tech beat another 16 teams with a score of 811.
