The Green House

All information you need for a green house.

The Foundation of a Green Home

When people think about building a green home, they often think about the insulation, the windows,, the heating system and various energy wise elements. However, the one thing that most people overlook is the crawlspace. For those of you unfamiliar with this term, you should know that a crawl space is sort of a mini basement which serves as a foundation. This place is usually used for plumbing connections, furnaces, moisture barriers and so on. However, most home owners have never even steeped inside their crawlspaces and are oblivion towards the green potential of this space. If you want to build your home from scratch, you must give extra attention to the crawlspace.

What are the advantages of an improved crawlspace?
For most houses, the crawlspace is a major source of energy loss. This happens due to the fact that most crawlspaces are designed with foundation vents which are supposed to get rid of excess humidity. However, this vents also allow hot air to enter the home in the summer and cold air to enter in the winter. This means that your cooling/heating system will have to work harder to maintain a constant temperature thus it will consume more energy.

How should a green crawls space look like?
As weird as it may sound to some conventional home builders, crawlspaces should be unvented. A home with an un-vented crawlspace requires a smaller heating/cooling unit which is good both for the environment and your pocket. In order to have a better control of the humidity levels in your home, you might also want to consider a crawl space dehumidifier. These devices are very useful in keeping the humidity at bay. Furthermore, they are very easy to use and some come at very affordable prices. When buying a crawl space dehumidifier, there are a couple of things that you must keep in mind. First of all, the size of the unit should be proportionate with your crawlspace. Furthermore, it should have an automatic pump so that you don’t have to go in the crawlspace every day to empty the tank. Last but not least, since green thinking is of the essence, many crawlspace dehumidifier models are designed in order to consume a minimum amount of energy.

Crawlspace insulation
A sealed crawlspace is a lot more efficient than a vented one. However, sealing alone will not get the job done and you will also have to insulate it with rigid foam or any other closed-cell polyurethane foam. The floor foam layer should be at least 6 mil heavy in order to keep soil gases and moisture from getting in.
