The New Toyota Prius v

The Toyota Prius v is a full hybrid gasoline-electric station wagon introduced in Japan and the U.S. in 2011 and in Europe in 2012. Toyota Motor Corporation says the v stands for versatility, as this is the first Prius model to be spun off from the Prius platform. There are many Prius v offers, depending on region and type of model you choose. The Prius v comes with a nickel-metal hydride battery in Japan and is sold for US$ 29,000 and with a lithium-ion battery at a price of US$ 37,000. For American, the Prius v offers only the nickel-metal hydride battery variant for US$ 26,400.

This five-door minivan or station wagon has an extended roofline to resemble the familiar triangular shape that has become a symbol of the Prius. The difference is that the Prius ¬v comes with a special roof spoiler that improves air flow and dynamics and has 50% more cargo space than the 2010 Toyota Prius.

The Prius v offers many of the standard features of the 2010 Prius, such as the four driving modes: Normal, Power, Eco and EV. It is also fitted with a smart key with push button start, Hill Start Assist Control and a back-up camera. Those who will purchase it can also opt for energy-efficient LED headlamps, dynamic radar cruise control or an advanced parking guidance system. A real attraction is the panoramic sunroof made from lightweight-resin which is 40% lighter than a glass roof of the same size.

The Toyota Prius v uses a 1.8 liter Atkinson cycle gasoline inline-four engine, a 60 kW traction motor and a 201 volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack. More than this, the Prius v offers a number of improvements on motor control, suspensions and a redesigned engine coolant that reduces the time for engine warm-up and seat heating in cold weather. The American version of the Prius v comes with a Vehicle Proximity Notification System which alerts pedestrians and the blind of the vehicle’s proximity. This safety was designed because the EV can be quite silent when traveling at low speeds.

According to Toyota, this 96 horsepower vehicle produces up to 66% less smog-forming emissions than an average new vehicle and has a fuel consumption ranging between 4.1 and 3.8 l/100 km depending on the drive mode. The Prius v offers not only a five-seat model, but a seven-seat, three-row model as well, which is mainly sold in Europe. Prices for the latter are somewhere around US$ 37,000, but in the United States it is offered in three configurations: the base Prius v Two, the mid-range Prius v Three and the premium-level Prius v Five which comes with SofTex-trimmed seats, three-door smart key, fog lamps and 17-inch alloy wheels.
