The Pros and Cons of a Reverse Osmosis Water Filter for Home

Reverse Osmosis water systems are among the most popular water filtration systems in the world. They were primarily used by bottled water distributors. As you can imagine, despite the fact that bottled water features pictures of mountain springs and polar bears, that water does not really come from actual mountain springs. Even if it did, bottled water distributors would still have to filter it. Therefore what would be the point of transporting large amounts of spring water when you can simply filter plain tap water and get the same result. Moreover, since reverse osmosis is a rather simple process which does not require large equipment, this process can also be integrated into residential water filters. Due to this fact, the popularity of reverse osmosis water filter has constantly been on the rise in the last couple of years. After all, what is the purpose of buying bottled water when you can benefit from the same water quality by filtering your own tap water. Lately, a large number of filters have taken over the market. These filters claim to be just as efficient as reverse osmosis filters in the fight against dangerous contaminants but they also offer an important extra benefit which RO systems can offer. Lets see what are the pros and cons of a reverse osmosis water filter are and what alternatives we have to such a filter.

Advantages

A reverse osmosis water filter works by using a very thick filtering membrane. That membrane is so wide that it could cover a few kilometers yet it is comprised in a small cartridge. Its density is what traps most water contaminants. Such a water filter can handle not only chlorine and chloramine, but also more dangerous contaminants such as organic chemicals, arsenic and nitrates. Water that has been filtered with a reverse osmosis system is completely stripped of any contaminants or minerals. Such a water filter is ideal for people with poor immune systems such as cancer patients whose immunity has been compromised by invasive cancer treatments.

Disadvantages

Thought it claims to filter all contaminants, reverse osmosis filters can sometimes miss some smaller contaminants such as microscopic pesticides or herbicides. Furthermore, even a highly efficient RO system that filters all possible contaminants still has a certain disadvantage: along with the dangerous contaminants, such a system will also filter the good minerals found in tap water such as Potassium, Calcium and Fluoride. A RO water filter can’t really distinguish between the good minerals and the dangerous contaminants. As such, it strips the water of virtually any additional particles, be they good or bad. If you read some reverse osmosis whole house filtration system reviews, you will see that these systems usually come with a re-mineralization unit which puts back the beneficial substances in the filter water. However, this only happens with the best models.

Water filter alternatives

As we already mentioned, reverse osmosis systems are solely one choice. The market is filled with various types of water filters, all designed for certain types of contaminants. Some filters, such as the Aquasana water filters feature a combination of filtering membranes, carbon filters, ion exchange processes and even sterilizing UV lights. Combined, these filtering solutions deliver healthy, great tasting water that is not stripped of any of the good minerals but solely of the dangerous contaminants. Therefore, our advice to you would be to read the latest whole house filtration system reviews and pick the type of filter which is best suitable for your needs.
